About & History of Jaisamand Lake
Only 48 km from Udaipur, a stunning artificial lake built in 17th century by Maharana Jai Singh, is the second largest one in Asia. On the banks of the lake, one can find graceful marble ‘Chhatris’ and beautiful summer palaces of the Udaipur queens. The lake is said to be the home of Jaisamand Lake and Wildlife Sanctuary, possessing a rich wildlife in its natural habitat.
Jaisamand Lake was built by Maharaja Jai Singh in the 17th century and created by damming Gomti River; today it measures 14 km long and 9km wide. There are beautiful cherries (cenotaphs) around this embankment, each with an elephant in front. The summer palaces of the Udaipur Maharanis are also here. The lake features a variety of bird life and the nearby Jaisamand Sanctuary is home of panthers, leopards, deer, wild boars and crocodiles. THE MAN-MADE WONDER
Jaisamand Sanctuary is situated 50-km south of Udaipur, the picturesque 'City of Lakes', succulent valleys and hills. It is on the bank of Jaisamand Lake, the second largest artificial Lake in Asia. The sanctuary extends over an area of 52-sq-kms of thick forest land. Established in 1957, this sanctuary is located besides the man-made lake by the same name. Covering a total area of 160-sq-kms, it harbours sloth bear, leopard, chital, chinkara, wild boar and a number of birds. Some crocodiles and fish can also be spotted here.
It was built by Maharaja Jai Singh, who on its inauguration on 2nd June 1691 AD, walked around it distributing gold equal to his own weight in charity. He built six 'Chhatris' (cenatophs) with finely embroidered elephants in front and the temple of Lord Shiva in the centre of the embankment.

The Wild Life Sanctuary
The sanctuary is situated along one of the largest artificial lakes of the world called the Jaisamand Lake. Fourteen kilometres in length & nine kilometres in width, the lake has a circumference of nearly eighty-eight kilometres. Close to Jaisamand is the game sanctuary, which is spread over an area of about 45 kilometres & has a motorable road. The sanctuary shelters wild animals like Panthers, Wild Bear, Spotted Deer, Sambhars etc.

The Wild Population
The Leopard, Hyena, Jungle Cat, Fox and Wolf are among the carnivores of the sanctuary. Other wildlife here includes Sambhar, Chital, Langur and Chinkara. The Jaisamand Lake is the abode of crocodiles, turtles and a variety of fish. Various species of terrestrial and water birds can also be seen here.
