Introduction:
Khandala is one of the important hill stations in the state of Maharashtra and because of which, it is the pride of Sahyadri Mountains. The origin of the place is obscure. Chattrapati Shivaji, the founder of the first Maratha Empire, ruled the area around Khandala. Later it came under the Peshwa rulers, who founded the second Maratha Empire. It was finally taken over by the British when they defeated the Peshwas.

History
Information regarding the origin of Khandala is not much vividly available. Chhatrapati Shivaji, the originator of the first Maratha Empire, ruled the territory around Khandala. Presently it came under the control of the Peshwa rulers, who discovered the second Maratha Empire. It was eventually taken over by the British when they routed the Peshwas.

Geography and Climate
Climate in Khandala is more or less pleasant throughput the year. Summers ranging from April to June are generally mild and winter months from November-February are cool. Heavy southwestern monsoons hit the place between June and September. It is best to visit the place during the months between October and May.Temperatures varies from 12 degree celsius to 36 degree celsius throughout the year with an annual rainfall of 450 cm.

Tiger's Leap

Karla and Bhaja Caves are located at a distance of approximately 16 km from Khandala. Dating back to the 2nd century BC, these caves are visited by a large numbers of tourists every year. They belong to the Hinayana sect of Buddhism and serve as an example of the rock cut architecture of that time.

Khandala Lake and Bhushi Lake

By Rail:
Khandala hill station falls on the main railway line between Mumbai and Pune. Each and every express train that plies between the two cities makes a stoppage here. Lonavala railway station is also situated quite nearby.

By Road:
Regular buses ply between Lonavala and Khandala, at an interval of 15 minutes. Apart from that, one can easily get buses as well as taxis, from Khandala to Mumbai and Pune. By bus, it takes approximately 2 hrs from Pune and 4 hrs from Mumbai to reach here.
